Just 20km from the CBD is the historical and colourful port town of Fremantle. You can catch a train to Fremantle, but the most pleasant way to arrive is by ferry from Perth along the Swan River – keep your eye out for dolphins as they are regularly spotted on the way.
Seven days a week, the streets of Fremantle buzz with shoppers, outdoor diners and pubs brimming over onto the pavement. Funky fashions, bustling markets, street performances and outdoor beer gardens make “Freo” a lively place to be. It’s one of Perth’s café pulse points and best of all is the fresh seafood.
As you people-watch from that street-side café, spare a moment to take in the majestic architecture of colonial buildings. This port city has plenty of sea-faring and European history.
The convict-built Fremantle Prison and the excellent Western Australian Maritime Museum tell stories of valour, hardship and mischief. Twenty metres below the Fremantle Prison is a labyrinth of convict-built tunnels which you can now explore.
Fremantle is a popular place to live – you might even bump into Ben Elton who lives here with his Perth-born wife and family during the Aussie summer months.
